Here Ryan Diefenbach explains how to use TouchMe with Teenage Engineering OP-Z.
Tutorial by Alfredo
This is the first tutorial of a series where we would like to invite our community to share their setups using Playtronica devices to control different hardware and software. If you believe that your setup is really cool and you use a Playtronica device to control any hardware synth, app, or plugin in an interesting way, feel free to reach out on our Facebook friends group.
For this tutorial, we have our user Alfredo who taught us a really cool approach using TouchMe to control Teenage Engineering OP-Z and the Korg NTS-1 simultaneously. Listen to how cool it is!
Who is Alfredo, aka Odalfer?
Born in California and raised in Guadalajara (Mexico), Alfredo grew up surrounded by a multicultural blend of urban influences. To talk about Odalfer (Alfredo’s music alter-ego) we need to talk about the streets and its urban tribes which influenced the thoughts of a whole generation. His drive has led him to spin memorable desert, forest, and warehouse parties for the underground LA scene.

How could you replicate Alfredo’s setup and get your Touch Me controlling your OP-Z and NTS-1?
The answer to that is the following 5 simple steps:
1. Turn on the OP-Z
2. Connect TouchMe to the OP-Z via the USB port available on your OP-Z
Note: for this step, you must have a USB-C adapter or Micro USB to USB-C cable.
3. Connect the NTS-1 via MIDI (MIDI channel 8 was used for this tutorial) to the OP-Z
- TouchMe by default sends MIDI over all channels and that would control any channel you’re on in the OP-Z.
For example: if you are editing the sequence on the lead rack, the TouchMe would control that instrument.
4.1. Instrument 8 (Chord) of the OP-Z allows the TouchMe to send MIDI notes to the NTS-1. In this way, the OP-Z is acting as a bridge between NTS-1 and OP-Z.
Note: Make sure to set the same MIDI Channel on both (host and receiver device). In this tutorial, the OP-Z is the host, and the NTS-1 the receiver.
For example: if you want to double your bass track using the NTS-1 then set the MIDI channel on the bass track to the same MIDI channel as the NTS-1. In our scenario, we have the chord channel on channel 8 triggering the NTS-1 on MIDI channel 8 as well. With these settings, we can use TouchMe to play both devices simultaneously on the scale you prefer.
5. You are ready to go! Interact with your TouchMe to set the melodies and have fun!
We hope this tutorial helped you understand how can you use TouchMe with Teenage Engineering OP-Z and the Korg NTS-1. Such a small setup and so powerful!
We hope that triggers you to create super slick, but powerful setups using Playtronica devices. And if you do, please share them with us.
One last thanks to Alfredo (aka Olafer) that was so kind in sharing these little tricks and his great music with us!
